Description
I was at a retreat in Pittsford, New York in October 2022. My husband was Antiquing and texted me a picture of a Sampler named “1919 G. Desutter 1920”. I was not too interested, but I agreed to look at the Sampler. So, what really caught my eye was although it was old, it had appropriate stains, there was something behind the Linen. So out of curiosity I purchased the Sampler.
Once the frame was opened, a photo of a sporting team from “05” was found. I can only assume “05” means 1905. I have tried to locate which sporting team it belonged to. It is obviously a football team. I contacted many colleges and high schools, and they were not able to claim the team photo. The antique store advised that many people in days gone by would hide documents which they thought of value in their furniture etc.
I was not able to locate any history of G. Desutter from the early 1900’s. The name DeSutter is derived from the Latin word sutor which means shoemaker. It is widely used in Flanders, a region of Belgium. The first record of the name is in the 13th century in Flanders. DeSutters originated in northwestern part of Belgium in the Ghent are near the English Channel, as week as in Northwestern France. Variants of the name include De Sutter, Desoto, DeZuter, DeZutter, and De Zutter, the majority of the Desutters in the United Sates are descendants from people who moved there in the mid to late 19th and 20th century. Most settled in the upper plan states of the Midwest such as Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas for the vast farming land as well as the Catholic mission work.
I do know that football was an American sport, so this is definitely an American Sampler, Football’s roots stem from combing the two sports of rugby and soccer. On November 6, 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played what is considered the first football game. Interestingly, enough of what we know today as the NFL was started in 1920. This Sampler was hemmed and loosely placed behind the glass. I have returned it to the original mounting and frame with the picture behind the linen as I found it. The mounting was not laced or tacked, this is a sure was to tell that it was not a print Sampler. With purchase of the pattern a copy picture of the sporting team is included.
